The closer I try to get to the cloud, the further it retreats. The cloud is a symbol for so much that it’s impossible to apprehend. Which, of course, is very much like the image of clouds in general. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; **The digital** cloud, however, is a mockery and a euphemism, at least insofar as it relates to our perception of ourselves as enlightened individuals who strive for knowledge. The cloud, much like the digital offshoots of capitalism, lies straight to our faces. It doesn’t upset us because it also makes our lives more comfortable. The cloud strips us of the desire to understand how things work. Where our data is, how it’s processed, who has access to it, what I say to whom, and what risks it all entails.  &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;  **Although** the development of photography represents a key milestone in the world of rationalization, it also has a magical effect. The images emerge like a miracle to our senses. Of course, we could also explain that in rational terms. We could do the same with the cloud. We’d rather be consumers. Photography and the cloud cater to, serve, and benefit our day-to-day laziness. Our desire for everyday practicality and convenience benefits those who understand the inner workings of human nature and technology: political and economic demagogues.

Neben visuellen Arbeiten gehört zur Praxis des Fotokünstlers Adrian Sauer auch eine textliche Auseinandersetzung mit dem Medium Fotografie, der er bislang in Form von Plakatinstallationen und auditiven Hörstücken nachgegangen ist. Diese im Auftrag für C/O Berlin entstandene Textarbeit versammelt eigene Gedanken und recherchiertes Material zum Thema der Cloud vom Anfang bis zu grauen Wolken. Dabei spielt der Einfluss des Wetters auf die Fotografie ebenso eine Rolle wie das menschengemachte Klima und die technische Cloud. In der Zusammenschau ergeben die 30 Kommentare über Fototechnik, Wetter und Computer ein Panorama des flüchtigen Phänomens der Wolke. # Adrian Sauer

(b. 1976 DE, lives in Leipzig, DE)

Artist Adrian Sauer creates both visual works and textual works examining the medium of photography as a part of his practice. Until now, his textual pieces have been presented as poster installations and auditory sound pieces. This textual work commissioned by C/O Berlin brings together his own thoughts as well as researched materials on the topic of clouds from “About this text” to “Weather.” The effect of weather on photographs is just as relevant as human-influenced climate change and the technological cloud. Seen together, the thirty commentaries on photographic technologies, weather, and IT show a spectrum of perspectives of the ephemeral phenomenon of the cloud. The terms are organized in a form resembling digital hyperlinks, a text form that follows a networked structure rather than a linear one, yielding cross-references between the different entries.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; **Designed as** a digital glossary, the piece accompanies the themes of the exhibition [“Songs of the Sky. Photography and the Cloud”](https://co-berlin.org/en/program/exhibitions/songs-sky), which can be seen at [C/O Berlin](https://co-berlin.org/en) in the Amerika Haus from 11 December 2021 to 21 April 2022.

Clouds, Gray


Only through photography did it become possible to compare clouds across linguistic, national, and continental borders. It allows us to make objective judgments about shape, size, and composition. However, there are some key properties that cannot be depicted in photographs: electrostatic charges, or the microscopic particles on which water vapor condenses. Temperature and humidity cannot be photographed, either.

Huge clouds can sometimes be seen rising from the cooling tower of the power plant near Leipzig. We used to jokingly tell the children that there was a cloud factory there.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; **This came** to mind when I read the words of Bertolt Brecht: “The situation has become so complicated because the simple ‘reproduction of reality’ says less than ever about reality. Es gibt verschiedene Bilder davon. Das Server-Gebäude des französischen Datenspeicheranbieters OVH steht in Flammen. Man sieht das Gebäude in voller Ausdehnung brennen. Schwarze Rauchwolken steigen von unten durch das Feuer rot beleuchtet in den noch dunkleren Nachthimmel. Auf weiteren Bildern ist das Gebäude am nächsten Morgen zu sehen. Die Wände sind beschädigt oder ganz zerstört. Der Lack der meisten Paneele ist bis zur Unkenntlichkeit zerschmolzen. Einige Wandsegmente haben Lüftungsschlitze. An ihnen ist die Farbe erhalten geblieben. Sie zeigt sich trotz der ganzen Zerstörung orange, lila, grün und hellgrau. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; **OVH** war zu diesem Zeitpunkt das größte europäische Unternehmen zur Datenspeicherung. Viele Kunden, die keine eigenen Sicherheitskopien hatten, haben ihre Daten verloren. Die Sicherheitskopien, die OVH den Kunden als Service anbot, wurden teilweise auch zerstört.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;  **Ich habe** von dem Feuer durch einen Tweet von K. erfahren, mit der ich Monate vorher gemeinsam an einem Text schrieb. Ein Kapitel des Buchs, an dem sie mit zwei weiteren Personen arbeitete, war bei OVH gespeichert. Ich habe sie nicht gefragt, ob sie ein Backup hat.

Feuer


The server building of the French data storage provider OVH is in flames. And there’s no shortage of photographic coverage. You can see the flames gradually consume the building. Black clouds of smoke, tinged red by the fire, rise into an even darker night sky. Further photographs show the building the following morning. Some segments of the wall feature ventilation slits on which the paint has remained intact. The orange, purple, green, and light gray still show through despite the destruction. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; **At the** time, OVH was Europe’s largest data storage company, and many customers who did not have their data backed up lost it entirely. Backups that OVH would offer to clients as part of their service were also destroyed. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; **I found** out about the fire through a tweet by K., with whom I had worked as a coauthor months earlier. A chapter of the book she was collaborating on with two other people was also stored at OVH. I didn’t ask if she had a backup.

Er glaubte, übernatürliche Mächte übten jeweils einen erkennbaren Einfluss aus. Als er nach einer Weile keinen verständlichen Zusammenhang feststellen konnte, stoppte er diese Aufzeichnungen. Sehen


Graue terrazzoartige Fliesen bilden das regelmäßige Raster des Bahnsteigs. Zu sehen sind ein lila und ein rosa Koffer. Dazu eine schwarze Reisetasche. Der Blick ist nach unten gerichtet. Das Licht ist nicht dunkel, hat aber auch keine erkennbare Richtung. Die Person im Vordergrund trägt dunkelblaue Jeans. Darauf sind weiße Wolken zu sehen. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; **Der Boden** besteht aus einer warmen Oberfläche, die einem Parkett nachempfunden ist. K. steht in der Küche. Er trägt Boxershorts, hellblau. Darauf befinden sich weiß umrissene Wolken. Die obere Hälfte ist jeweils weiß, die untere dunkler. In regelmäßigen Abständen ist das Wort »Simpsons« zu lesen.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;  **Am Eingang** der Einkaufspassage mit Supermarkt, Bäckerei und Imbiss bemerke ich seit einiger Zeit immer wieder einen älteren Mann. Er sieht äußerst verwahrlost aus. Die Kleidung ist schmutzig. Oft liegt er am Boden direkt hinter der gläsernen Eingangstür. Manchmal sitzt er auf einem alten Schulstuhl. Oft hat er einen Becher Kaffee bei sich. Gelegentlich auch ein Bier. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; **Als ich** ihn das letzte Mal sah kam er mir auf der Straße neben der Passage entgegen. Die Jacke und die Hose in fürchterlichem Zustand. Darunter aber strahlte ein hellblaues T-Shirt mit Wolken darauf hervor. Es sah ganz neu aus.

Jeff Bezos sagt, speichern sei günstiger als löschen. Ich finde die Quelle dieser Aussage nicht. Nach allem, was ich über die Logik von wirtschaftlichem Wachstum, den Umgang von Cloudanbietern mit Nutzerdaten und schließlich meinen Umgang mit dem eigenen Archiv weiß, habe ich keinen Zweifel daran, dass es stimmt.

Trust

Je mehr ich versuche, mich der Wolke zu nähern, desto weiter rückt sie in die Ferne. Die Wolke ist ein Bild für so vieles, dass man es gar nicht fassen kann. Was natürlich auch wieder dem Bild der Wolke entspricht.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; **Die Computer-Cloud** hingegen ist ein Hohn und ein Euphemismus. Jedenfalls für unser Selbstbild als aufgeklärte, nach Erkenntnis strebende Individuen. Sie lügt uns so ins Gesicht wie wir es von den digitalen Auswüchsen des Kapitalismus erwarten. Wir regen uns nicht weiter drüber auf, weil sie unser Leben so auch angenehmer macht. Die Cloud beschreibt die Aufgabe des Verlangens, zu wissen, wie etwas funktioniert. Wo unsere Daten sind, wie sie verarbeitet werden, wer Zugriff darauf hat, was ich davon wem preisgebe und welche Risiken damit verbunden sind. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; **Obwohl die** Fotografie ein wichtiger Meilenstein in der Welt der Rationalisierung ist, ist ihre Wirkung auch magisch. Für unsere Sinne entstehen die Bilder wie ein Wunder. Natürlich könnten wir rational erklären, wie das alles funktioniert. Das könnten wir ja auch bei der Cloud. Wir ziehen es vor, Konsumenten zu sein. Fotografie und Cloud richten sich an unsere alltägliche Bequemlichkeit, dienen und profitieren von ihr. Unsere Alltagspragmatik und Bequemlichkeit im Denken lässt jene profitieren, die sowohl die Funktionsweise der Technik als auch die menschliche Natur verstehen: die politischen und wirtschaftlichen Demagogen.

Erst die Nutzung der Fotografie ermöglichte es, die Wolken über Sprach-, Landes- und Kontinentalgrenzen zu vergleichen. Bezüglich Form, Größe und Anordnung konnte nun objektiv geurteilt werden. Einige ganz wesentliche Eigenschaften können auf Fotos jedoch nicht dargestellt werden: die elektrostatische Aufladung, die mikroskopisch kleinen Schwebteilchen, an denen der Wasserdampf kondensiert. Auch nicht die Temperatur und die Luftfeuchtigkeit.

It’s been raining for over twenty- four hours. We’re now essentially inside a cloud. The sky is blue and cloudless. Even on my short walk from the hotel to my makeshift workspace, the air still feels fresh. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; **After some** time has passed, individual clouds have begun reappearing in the sky, temporarily covering the sun. **The sky** is a flat gray. Schon auf dem kurzen Weg vom Hotel zur vorläufigen Arbeitswohnung spüre ich, dass die Luft noch frisch ist.  &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;  **Jetzt, wo** einige Zeit vergangen ist, sind wieder einzelne Wolken am Himmel. Sie sind in der Lage, die Sonne zeitweise zu verdecken.  &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;  **Der Himmel** ist grau mit wenigen Abstufungen. Es fällt immer wieder Regen. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;   **Der Regen** fällt gleichmäßig und stark. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;   **Der Himmel** wird heller. Der Regen schwächt sich ab. Heute ist die Wolke etwa so groß wie die Burg, die auf dem Berg liegt. Oben ist sie heller als unten. Die Sonne schafft es nicht, durch die Wolken zu dringen.  &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;   **Es ist** wieder viel grauer. Auch beginnt es zu regnen.    &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; **Es regnet**. Der graue Himmel ist von hellen Streifen durchzogen. Einzelne Wolken lassen sich abgrenzen. Ich kann immer noch nicht fassen, wie riesig die Wolken im Vergleich zur Burg aussehen. Ich weiß natürlich, dass die Burg sich in einer Entfernung von etwa 600 Metern befindet. Ich weiß auch, dass das eine optische Wirkung ist. Aber ich staune.
